Summary
Abstract:
This dataset represents a comparison of major ion and trace element chemistry and stable water isotopes of subglacial and proglacial waters as well as icings (naled ice and accreted ice) originating from Isunnguata Sermia and Leverett Glacier. Samples were collected across multiple seasons in 2022-2024, covering September and March to June to compare solute export and subglacial weathering processes across seldom measured seasons. The dataset allows us to compare the major geochemical and hydrological processes and products occurring beneath the glacial forefields of West Greenland during different hydrological regimes.

| Quality: | The standards employed are described in the methodology section. All laboratory analyses were performed in triplicate to obtain the reported reproducibility errors. Lower limit of detection is determined from the standard deviation of the intercept of the calibration curve. 'n.m.' indicates that a measurement was skipped. In most cases, the omission was intentional, i.e. the measurement was inappropriate or only a subsection of samples was selected for analysis. 'N/A' indicates the measurement could not be collected. This is primarily used for reproducibility error when the measured value was below limit of detection. In a few cases, the measurement was not possible due to instrument saturation or interference on the ICP-OES. | |
| Lineage/Methodology: | The following types of sample were collected from different water and ice sources across the Isunnguata Sermia and Leverett Glaciers forefields: (i) accreted ice, (ii) glacial ice, (iii) glacial water (i.e. not upwelling but flowing unpressurised from the glacier terminus), (iv) hillslope water of non-glacial origin, (v) naled ice, (vi) naled water (i.e. collected from within a borehole into a naled), (vii) ponded water, (viii) river water (from the main proglacial stream), (ix) snow, (x) supraglacial water, (xi) terrace ice (in the proglacial stream) and (xii) upwelling water. When possible, the pH and conductivity of water samples were measured in the field by directly placing the probes into the water source. Water samples were collected in sterile 50 ml falcon tubes and filtered using Whatman 0.45µm nylon membrane filters. Ice cores of accreted and naled ice were extracted using a combination of hand (SPIRE Auger) and drill corers to a maximum depth of 3m. Cores sections were stored in sterile whirlpak bags. Concentrations of major anions in the water and ice samples were analysed on a Dionex high-pressure ion chromatography (HPIC) system using 5 ml of sample and analysed in triplicate. Standard solutions of fluoride (F-), chloride (Cl-), nitrite (NO2-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), sulfate (SO42-), bromide (Br-), nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO43-) were prepared using Milli-Q ultrapure water to 18.2 megaohm-centimeter to obtain standard curves. Concentrations of major cations and trace elements were analysed on an Optima 8000 inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) using 7 ml of sample and analysed in triplicate. Standard solutions of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), sodium (Na), potassium (K), manganese (Mn) and silica (Si) were prepared using Milli-Q ultrapure water to to 18.2 megaohm-centimeter to obtain standard curves. Aliquots from cores and water samples were analysed for stable isotopes of water using a Picarro L2130-i cavity ringdown spectrometer (isotopic water analyzer) equipped with A0211 vaporization module. The ratio of 18O to 16O and of deuterium to protonium was determined in ppm calibrated with Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW), Finse Stable Water Isotope Standard (FINSE), Global Water Standard (GLW) and Standard Light Antarctic Precipitation 2 (SLAP2). Results were corrected for memory, drift, and offset from the VSMOW scale using mid-range standards using FARLAB Liquid Water Isotope Measurement Processor - FLIIMP [Sodemann et al., 2023]. |
