Summary
Abstract:
This dataset is a compilation of copepod (a group of marine zooplankton) prevalence records derived from multiple sources, including records of presence/absence and the number of individual animals sampled per haul, per m2, and per m3. Within the 976,916 unique records, there are 839 unique taxa, of which 708 are resolved to the species level, with the remaining 131 resolved to higher taxonomic rank. Approximately 33% of the records are resolved to copepodite stage: 385 species have records corresponding to multiple distinct copepodite stages, and 233 species have records corresponding to only a single copepodite stage (usually the adult C6) or a range of stages. The data span 1888-2022, though the bulk of the records are from 1980 onwards. All data are from between 30 degrees South and 83 degrees South. Sample depth is specified for each record, and some sample events measured numerous depth layers with a single gear deployment. The samples were collected by a variety of methods - mostly net sampling - and the sampling equipment is specified in this compiled data set. Records from each source were cleaned, rearranged to have matching field names, harmonised to have consistent nomenclature within fields, compiled into a single dataset, followed by a final cleaning to remove duplicated rows. This dataset was originally created to model variability in spatial-temporal patterns of abundance of four copepod species found in the Southern Ocean. Given the long time-span, large spatial domain, and number of species, this dataset is a valuable resource for researchers interested in Southern Ocean copepods.

| Quality: | The data were cleaned by identifying obvious reporting errors in the original records, correcting these when possible and omitting records when not possible. Flags were included for the Depth and Time fields to indicate if sample depth was estimated as the midpoint of reported top and bottom depths, and to indicate assumptions made about reporting of time zones. All species names were cross-referenced with an online copepod taxonomic database (https://www.marinespecies.org/copepoda) to edit any outdated names to the currently accepted scientific names, and include the genus where this was abbreviated in original records. Not all records that reported taxa with abbreviations could be resolved due to ambiguity in possible genus, so some abbreviations remain. As this dataset is a compilation, several fields contain many missing values where only some data sources provided that information. Missing values appear as NA. Much of this dataset was sourced from biodiversity data portals which may contain duplicate records both within the data portal and between other data sources. Duplicate records were identified, their metadata stored in detail, then removed. Duplicate records were removed fastidiously but, as this was done programmatically to a large dataset, some duplicates may persist, particularly where ambiguity remains in species names. | |
| Lineage/Methodology: | The data were collected during different research cruises spanning 15 decades. Therefore, sampling protocols varied considerably. This dataset specifies relevant metadata that were provided in the original records, including sampling equipment (Sample Gear), Net Mesh Size and Net Mouth Area. Abundance is specified as either individuals/sample, individuals/m2, or individuals/m3, converted from numerous units in original records. Many records provided information on copepod developmental stage, but with varying accuracy. This dataset regularises the nomenclature used in the original reports, and provides information on developmental stage in three separate fields: Maturity (juvenile, adult), Life Stage (egg, nauplius, copepodite), and Copepodite Stage (C1, ..., C6). 95% of the data were collected during 1980-2022. This dataset was produced as an output of the BIOPOLE and PolarRES projects. Instrumentation
| Data Collection: | The original samples were collected with a variety of equipment, specified in this dataset under the field name Sample Gear, with some further information included in the Net Mesh Size and Net Mouth Area fields. Information on copepod sorting and counting protocols is not included. The software used to process the original records into this dataset was R 4.6.1. |
