Raw bathymetry data collected from a Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam echosounder installed on the workboat Erebus during RRS Sir David Attenborough SD041 cruise, 2024
GB/NERC/BAS/PDC/02224
Abstract:
Presented here is the raw multibeam bathymetry data acquired from 2024-07-20 to 2024-08-21 as part of RRS Sir David Attenborough SD041 research cruise also referred to as KANG-GLAC. Bathymetry data were collected using a Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam echo-sounder installed on a pod on the Erebus workboat. Data are provided in raw Kongsberg format (.all). Data are unprocessed and therefore may contain incorrect depth measurements without further processing.
KANG-GLAC is a NERC funded project to investigate how the accelerating decay of the Greenland Ice Sheet will progress with climate change, and to better understand the knock-on effects this will have on ocean circulation and marine productivity. This work was funded by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) grant NE/V006509/1.

| Quality: | Presented here is the raw data. The data have not been corrected for vertical datum and no tide model was applied. No quality check has been performed. Data are not to be used for navigation. It is to be noted that the initial parameters were set up incorrectly within SIS with the Downward TX transducer and RX transducer with opposite values: RX transducer Z = -1.086 TX transducer Z = 1.109 |

| Lineage/Methodology: | The multibeam bathymetry data presented here have been acquired from 2024-07-20 to 2024-08-21 as part of RRS Sir David Attenborough cruise SD041. Erebus is set up with a Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam echo sounder with 1 degree x 1 degree acoustic beam widths, operating with frequencies between 200 and 400kHz. Multibeam bathymetry data were collected throughout the cruise, primarily to map unsurveyed areas and provide bathymetric characterisation of the local surroundings in shallow waters. The shallow-water EM2040 multibeam echosounder performed well throughout SD041. In some cases, the data were acquired opportunistically without proper monitoring. The data were acquired using the Seafloor Information System (SIS) software - version 4.3.2. The installation parameters were set up following the information from the Anko Maritime AS (2020) reference survey as follows: TX transducer: X = 0.1 m, Y= 5.714 m, Z = -1.109 m, Roll: 0.23 deg, Pitch = 1.64 deg, Heading = -0.17 deg RX transducer: X = -0.003 m, Y =6.017 m, Z = -1.086 m, Roll: 0.14 deg, Pitch =1.63 deg, Heading = -0.01 deg However, the initial parameters were set up incorrectly with the Downward TX transducer and RX transducer with opposite values: RX transducer Z = -1.086 m TX transducer Z = 1.109 m The multibeam system was monitored most of the time and the 'angular coverage', 'depth', 'ping mode' and 'mammal protection' parameters changed regularly to adapt to the water depth and sea conditions. In bad weather, to increase the quality of the data, the beam angles were reduced and the power set to maximum. ** Calibration results ** A Basic Installation Self-Test (BIST) was conducted in SIS prior to the calibration and no errors were identified. A patch test was performed on 20/07/2024 to calibrate the EM2040 under the survey name: ER041_a. The calibration was undertaken over four parallel lines (see Calibration lines parameters in Table 4) in Scapa Flow. To ensure that the Multibeam Echosounder system was fully calibrated, the Sound Velocity Profile (SVP) was updated with new values from a CastAway CTD undertaken shortly before the calibration. Lines were run at 2 knots and 5-6 knots to check for latency, pitch, roll and heading errors. The results of the calibration are as follows: Roll MRU (deg): old value:-0.19, new value:-0.09 Pitch MRU (deg): old value: 1.35, new value:0.00 Heading MRU (deg): old value: 0.00, new value:0.00 |
