Abstract:
This dataset presents the microparticle (dust, diatoms, pollen and spores), stable water isotope, liquid electrical conductivity and major ion concentrations from the first ice core drilled from Cordillera Darwin, Chile (2017-2020 CE). These records were presented in Tetzner et al. (2025) to assess the preservation of local-to-regional environmental information in the firn. Results obtained from the analysis of this dataset highlighted the potential of high elevation sites in the Cordillera Darwin Icefield to hold valuable paleoenvironmental records directly from the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly wind belt.
This dataset was created with the support of the Dieter R Tetzner's National Geographic Early Career Grant 2019.

Quality: | Microparticle concentration measurements were calibrated using polystyrene particle standards. Microparticle concentration data from the bottom most part of the CDB ice core is missing due to an instrument failure. Samples for Stable water isotopes were calibrated against V-SMOW standard. Samples for major ion analyses were run several times and calibrated against three working standards. | |
Lineage: | Microparticle concentration records were obtained using a a flow-through Klotz Abakus laser particle counter connected to a continuous ice core melter system at the British Antarctic Survey. Discrete ionic records (2.5 cm resolution) were obtained using ion chromatographic techniques in a reagent free Dionex ICS-2500 anion and IC 2000 cation systems in a class-100 clean room at the British Antarctic Survey. Discrete stable water isotope records (2.5 cm resolution) were obtained using a Picarro L2130-i at the British Antarctic Survey. Electrical conductivity was analysed using an Amber Science flow-through meter connected to a continuous ice core melter system at the British Antarctic Survey. Diatom, pollen and spore samples (15 cm resolution) were obtained through filtration. |
